Let’s start by asking a question. What drives us to be
social? The answer lies in our most unique attribute. Emotions. The fact that
we can feel emotions is the reason that drives us to be social. We laugh, we
cry, we get angry, we feel sad, we feel happy etc. All these emotions are fulfilled by being social. Because after all emotions are generated through our daily interactions. We all know "Happiness doubles through sharing and sorrow becomes half." We drive satisfaction from these emotions and these drive us to be social.
Emotions are strong feelings. But they are offline. Before
internet , we used to share our emotions with friends, colleagues or family
members at social places like playgrounds, school, colleges etc. But now we have
our social playgrounds on facebook, twitter or other social media, Now we
share our emotions to broader audience and with better tools. Earlier we could
share through talking. Now we do it through sharing photos, videos or simply through tweets.
But our offline and online worlds are not different. In fact
we share our offline world online like broadcasting our lives on internet. Whether
it’s about an amazing restaurant you went to or you watched a cricket match in
stadiums. You want to update your status. You share the events that happen in
your offline worlds to your online worlds. And this phenomenon drives whole
Social Media Industry.
With more than 3.5 billion pieces of content(posts, videos etc.) being posted on facebook every week, 35 hours of video footage every minute and 53% of people on twitter recommending companies or products in their tweets, Social Media has become the hot spot for businesses to market themselves.
But for us to be facebook is to live (our offline lives), to share and to have fun. After all it is our social playground. It satisfies our emotional drive. World is becoming social. Buyers and sellers are becoming friends. This is the power of Social Media.
